WARSAW, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Aleksander Miszalski, mayor of the southern Polish city of Krakow, was removed from his position in a recall referendum on Sunday, according to official results released Monday.

The Krakow Municipal Referendum Commission said 171,581 residents voted in favor of removing Miszalski from office. Turnout reached 29.99 percent, surpassing the required threshold of 26.98 percent.

Miszalski, a member of the Civic Coalition led by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, was elected mayor in 2024 and was due to serve until 2029.

The referendum was triggered by a citizen petition campaign amid criticism over transport policy, urban development and city finances.

More than 450 polling stations were open across Krakow on Sunday. Miszalski is expected to formally leave office on Tuesday.

Krakow, which has a population of about 800,000, is one of the country's major tourist destinations. ■
