DAR ES SALAAM, May 25 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,066 people died in road accidents in Tanzania between July 2025 and April 2026, down from 1,275 deaths recorded during the same period in 2024/2025, marking a 16.4 percent decline, Minister for Home Affairs Paschal Katambi Patrobass said on Monday.
Speaking to parliament in the capital, Dodoma, while presenting his ministry's budget proposals for the 2026/2027 financial year, the minister noted that injuries also dropped by 18 percent during the review period.
He said 1,869 people were injured in road accidents between July 2025 and April 2026, compared with 2,278 injuries recorded during the corresponding period in 2024/2025.
According to the minister, reported road safety incidents across the country fell from 1,322 cases to 1,233 cases.
Patrobass attributed the improvement to intensified road safety enforcement measures undertaken by the police force, including patrols on major roads nationwide.
The authorities penalized approximately 3 million drivers for violating road safety regulations and took legal action against them, including issuing warnings, imposing fines, prosecuting offenders in court, and suspending driving licenses, he added. ■
