LUANDA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- More than 100,000 women gathered on Saturday at the Bay of Luanda in Angola for the inaugural Women's Meeting of Luanda Province, held under the theme "Women of Luanda, Essence that Transforms."
Organized by the provincial government as part of Women's Month commemorations, the event brought together participants from all 16 municipalities, highlighting the diversity of Angolan women across age groups, social backgrounds, religious beliefs, and political affiliations.
Addressing the gathering, Luanda Provincial Governor Luis Manuel da Fonseca Nunes raised concern over rising deviant behavior among some youth, urging coordinated action by public institutions and society. He called for stronger policies focused on prevention, education, timely justice, and effective enforcement of sanctions.
Nunes also stressed the need to build trust in state institutions, saying no woman should feel unprotected in the face of violence or abuse, and no family should be left vulnerable to social challenges.
The event featured discussions on women's empowerment, gender equality, and women's role in national development, alongside cultural and recreational activities. Participants shared experiences and emphasized the importance of recognizing women as key drivers of social, economic, and political progress.
Officials called on all sectors of society to strengthen efforts to protect women and promote their well-being, noting that safeguarding women is essential to protecting families and securing the future of society.
The Luanda provincial government reaffirmed its commitment to advancing policies that promote equal opportunities and strengthen the role of women as a cornerstone of sustainable development in Angola. ■
