MADRID, May 26 (Xinhua) -- FC Barcelona legend Alexia Putellas announced on Tuesday that she will leave the club after 14 years in which she has established herself as one of the greatest players in women's football.
The 32-year-old, who joined Barca at 18, made the announcement in a video reflecting on a career in which she has helped take "the women's team further than we ever imagined."
"At the beginning, being a football player wasn't even recognized as a profession (for a woman)," she said adding that she was "privileged to have been part of this change."
"I have no words to describe what it's been like to experience this alongside all my teammates," continued Alexia.
"After all this, the time has come to acknowledge that I have given everything for these colors. With a daily commitment and obsession to constantly improve for 14 years," she said, who urged the young players at FC Barcelona to continue with the club's legacy.
Alexia's message comes just three days after she helped Barcelona win their fourth Women's Champions League title with a 4-0 victory over OL Lyonnes on Saturday.
Alexia leaves having played 507 games for Barca, scoring 232 goals and winning 30 major trophies as the club dominated women's football: 10 Liga F titles, 10 Copa de la Reina crowns, six Spanish Supercopa and four Champions League trophies.
Individually, she has won two Ballon d'Or awards and two Best FIFA Women's Player trophies, and was a key figure as Spain won the 2023 Women's World Cup, although her participation there was limited by a serious knee injury that sidelined her for almost a year.
Alexia will play her final two matches for Barcelona at home to Real Sociedad on Wednesday and away to Madrid CFF at the weekend. She has been linked with possible moves to Lyon and London City Lionesses. ■
