MADRID, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- La Liga struggler Mallorca sacked coach Jagoba Arrasate on Monday, a day after a 2-0 defeat at Celta Vigo left the club in the relegation zone.
Mallorca sit third from bottom with 24 points from 25 matches. Arrasate, the former Osasuna coach, was in his second season in charge and had a contract running until the end of June 2027.
"RCD Mallorca has ended Jagoba Arrasate's tenure as first-team coach," the club announced, adding that "the decision, made after an analysis of the team's performance, reflects the club's desire to begin a new chapter with the aim of reversing the current trend and facing the remaining challenges of the season with the best possible chance of success."
Arrasate joined Mallorca in the summer of 2024 after leaving Osasuna and guided the club to 10th place last season with 48 points from 38 games.
This season has proved more difficult, with Mallorca managing six wins and suffering 13 defeats. The team has also relied heavily on striker Vedat Muriqi, who has scored 16 of the club's 29 league goals.
Arrasate also had a public falling-out with former captain Dani Rodriguez, who has since joined second-division Leganes.
Sunday's loss was among Mallorca's poorest performances of the campaign, with the visitors failing to register a shot on target before conceding two late goals to Celta striker Iago Aspas. ■
