MEXICO CITY, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Mexico will further explore its water sources to meet its delivery obligations to the United States without harming local agriculture, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday.

In line with a recent agreement with the United States, Mexico made its first water delivery to its northern neighbor by tapping the reservoirs in the northern part of the country while minimizing the impact on Mexican farmers, Sheinbaum said at her daily press conference.

The agreement to deliver 249.163 billion cubic meters of water starting from Dec. 15 was reached after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs on Mexico for failing to meet its water delivery obligations.

"We worked with all the governors and sought a plan that would have minimal impact on farmers throughout the country, particularly in the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas," Sheinbaum said.

Authorities plan to resume a project proposed several years ago to build a pipeline to transport treated water from Nuevo Leon to Tamaulipas, to guarantee water for agricultural irrigation, regardless of rainfall, she said.

Mexico's government recently reaffirmed its commitment to the 1944 Water Treaty, also known as the Treaty on Utilization of Waters of the Colorado and Tijuana Rivers and of the Rio Grande, and to bilateral cooperation in the management of resources in the Rio Grande basin. ■
