Drug peddling suspects to be brought under rule of law: Bangladeshi official

DHAKA, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Bangladeshi Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal Thursday said anyone accused of drug peddling will be brought under the rule of law.

At least 50 people have reportedly been killed in the last 10 days in a series of incidents, which law enforcers described as "shootouts" amid a countrywide anti-drug crackdown.

"We've made list of drug dealers. And they will be detained and brought to trial," the minister said Thursday, speaking at an awareness campaign of Dhaka Metropolitan Police which distributed anti-drug leaflets among pedestrians and commuters.

In recent years, the Bangladeshi government law-enforcement agencies have seized yaba tablets almost every day, in large and small quantities, across Bangladesh.

However, drug traffickers have succeeded in eluding the authorities as the proliferation of yaba specially continues alarmingly.

Against this backdrop, Bangladesh's anti-crime elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) earlier this month announced the country-wide anti-narcotics drive.
